Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring, inflammatory disease which affects skin and the joints. It is a recurring disease of the immune system that can occur at any age. Psoriasis is characterised by painful skin lesions that itch, crack and bleed. The exact cause behind the disease is still not known but it has been shown to have a strong genetic component. Many factors such as stress, streptococcal infection, medicines, alcohol and damage to the skin, trigger the disease. The incidence of psoriasis in the western populaces is 2-3%. Till today, there are no permanent cures for psoriasis, but there are many therapies which can reduce or nearly stop their symptoms.

Each case of psoriasis is different from another one, so the treatment also varies. The type of treatment given to the patient depends upon the age and gender of the individual and the severity of the disease. Various treatment options which can nearly provide cure for psoriasis are:

• Topical ointments: The first line of treatment for skin lesions is use of topical creams and ointments. They control inflammation and excessive skin cell production. Specific lotions containing salicylic acid, coal tar or corticosteroids are available for scalp treatment. They are effective in treating milder disease, but as the disease progresses, topical treatments may prove insufficient.

• Phototherapy: In this therapy, the patient is exposed to short periods of sunlight or UV radiations. It has been found that UV rays of the sun have beneficial effects on skin lesions. For this, narrowband UVB or broadband UVB are used. In some cases, topical or oral administration of Psoralen along with UVA rays (PUVA) brings relief.

• Systemic medications: Those cases, that are resistant to both external applications and phototherapy are treated with systemic medications. Immuno-suppressants and retinoids are FDA approved drugs for psoriasis.

• Biologic agents: Biologics are designed to target specific processes in the immune system that causes psoriasis flare. They act by blocking the action of specific cell called T-cell or by blocking proteins in the immune system, such as tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). They are given by injection or IV infusion.

• Alternative therapy: Many people use various complementary and non-conventional treatments to treat psoriasis. For a long time, these alternative therapies have been successfully employed to give relief from psoriasis symptoms. Different alternative treatments are: -
